Route 1 is a short cross city route that falls into the 14, 122 and 123 family of routes, in that it doesn't go very far out from the City Centre on either end of the route. At the southern end of the route, it only goes as far as Sandymount St. John's Church, its whole routing on the southern end is covered by route 47. The Sandymount terminus, is a 5 minute walk from Sydney Parade Dart Station, and a 7 minute walk to the Merrion Road, where routes 4 and 7 pass. However, the route is very nice and offers for some really stunning scenery as it passes the Strand Road, along the beach. The southern end of the route comes in the form of the old route 2 which ran between Parnell Square and O'Connell Street. The route also passes Ringsend Bus Garage where the route is based.
Ringsend's AX489 and AX492 are seen at the Sandymount terminus of route 1 on the 30/3/2018.
Ringsend's AX492 and AX489 are seen at the Sandymount terminus of route 1 on the 30/3/2018.
On the northern part of the route it goes as far as Santry, again all of its northern routing is served by other bus routes. From O'Connell Street to the Swords Road the 41 also runs along its route, and after the Swords Road to Shanard Road, the 104 also serves all the stops and areas that the 1 serves. Hence, route 1 has no stops or areas exclusively served only by it. The Northern terminus is also very close to a main corridor, where other bus routes pass. The Shanard Road terminus only being a 2 minute walk from the Ballymun Road, which is served by route 4 again, 13, 17A and 42D. Interestingly enough the much longer route 4, passes very close to both termini's of the 1. It is also the next route I will be covering as there is no longer a route 2 or 3. Eventhough, route 1 is quite short, it is a very busy and popular route especially in the Southern end, where there is always a big Que at O'Connell Street waiting to board the route. The Northern routing isn't as popular, since it is served by a vast variety of routes. While the 47 does serve all of the Southern routing of the 1 it runs every hour or so. All of the 1's northern end used to be served by the Old 16,. Hence the route is an amalgamation of two old routes the 2 and the old 16. The route was a result of Network Direct where many services and routes had to be cut due to the recession. Something of note is that in the morning's (Monday to Friday) up until 9 p.m, the route only goes between Sandymount and O'Connell Street basically identical as the old 2 and is numbered route 1C. The Northern end is then served by the 16C in the early morning, otherwise the 16 does not serve Shanard Road.
Ringsend's SG96 is seen at the Shanard Road terminus of route 1 on the 28/3/2018.
Ringsend's SG97 is seen turning onto Newgrove Avenue on the 27/3/2018.
A Ringsend SG 212 is seen at O'Connell Street on the 18/3/2018, Dublin experienced some snow that day.
